Black Point

The rural coastal community of Black Point is located along along the Northumberland Strait on the west end of Little Harbour.  From early maps created, you can see that the point was originally known as Evans Point. It was changed Black Point in 1976.

Kings Head - Pictou County

Kings Head

The rural coastal community of Kings Head is located between Little Harbour and Melmerby Beach along the Northumberland Strait. The nearby headland was named Kings Head as early as 1781 and from this geographic feature, the community got its name. Priestville is community located south east of News Glasgow. It may have been so named because of a priest who lived here.

Little Harbour - Pictou County

Little Harbour is a rural coastal community located along the Northumberland Strait on the south side of Little Harbour. Mi’kmaq name for the area is “Menpekwik” meaning Erosion. River John - Pictou County

River John

River John is a community located along the Northumberland Strait at the mouth of River John where it empties into John Bay.  It was named after an early settler, John Patuguin. The Mi’kmaq name for the community is “Kajeboogwek” meaning flowing through desert or solitary place. Other early names for the area were Deception River, and John’s River.

Mount William - Pictou County

Mount William is a community located about halfway between the East River and Middle River branches of Pictou Harbour. It may have been named after either William Porter or William Fraser who received grants here or after William Porter’s father of the same name.

Woodburn - Pictou County

Woodburn

Woodburn, is a rural community located south of Kings Head along the west end of Merigomish Harbour. It was originally known as the Pine Tree Gut but later renamed Woodburn after John Wood, who received a grant of land here in 1810, combined with the Scottish word, “burn” means a rivulet or brook. The community name was also once spelled  Woodbourne, which you can notice on the original Land Grant map for the area.
