In 1834, a remarkable cartographic achievement emerged from colonial Nova Scotia; a detailed map so ambitious in scale that it would later become known simply as The Great Map. Compiled by William Mackay (both a surveyor and draughtsman) it was the first printed map to depict details of the interior regions of Nova Scotia based on contemporary surveys. At a time when much of the province remained imperfectly documented, this project helped mark a significant change in geographic knowledge, land administration, planning, and mapping.
For genealogists and local historians, the map remains valuable because some sections identify settlements and residents, providing insight into patterns of land occupation during the early nineteenth century. Here you will find the various panels of The Great Map that represented Pictou County’s geography in the 1830s.
