About Fisher’s Grant 24
Fisher’s Grant 24 is a residential Indian Reserve administered by Pictou Landing First Nation (PLFN). It is located between Boat Harbour, and the Northumberland Strait.
The name Fishers Grant refers to an early name for Pictou Landing, that was named after a large grant of land made to John Fisher in 1765.
The initial Reserve was created around 1866 when the Government purchased 50 acres for the Micmac Indians of Nova Scotia (plan 5218 CLSR NS). Several other small Reserves were created from various different Order in Council documents between 1876 and 1960.
In 1960 the Department of Indian Affairs divided the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia into several smaller communities and as a result created Pictou Landing First Nation. During that time they also amalgamated the various Reserve Lands all into one, creating Fisher’s Grant 24.
Other land, now known as Boat Harbour West 37 was also provided around that time.
Several other Addition to Reserve processes happened again in 1984, and 2003 allowing the Reserve to grow from around 30 acres (in 1866) to now well over 300 acres.
You can see part of the addition process and the parcels of land that would be involved in the 1879 Section 1 Map.
Fishers Grant 24G is another PLFN Reserve located in the area around Boat Harbour.
