Mount William is a community located about halfway between the East River and Middle River branches of Pictou Harbour. It may have been named after either William Porter or William Fraser who received grants here or after William Porter’s father of the same name.
Land in this area was granted to John, James, and William Porter, sons of William Porter to William and Peggy Fraser, to David Marshall and others in 1810. David Marshall requested a 300-acre lot north of here in June, 1808, and had occupied it by July, 1809.
A new school was built in 1874.
Population in 1956 was 100.
There is a small 9 hole Par-3 Golf Course located in Mount William.
Pictou County Solid Waste Facility is located in Mount William, just off the highway exit. https://www.pcwastemgmt.com
