Huggans Gut
Huggans Gut is a small narrow tidal inlet in the Community of Lower Barneys River that empties into Merigomish Harbour.
A gut is a narrow coastal waterway, often subject to strong tidal currents, that connects larger bodies of water. They are usually formed where a large body of water drains through a smaller opening.
Strong tidal currents flow back and forth, creating rapid water movement. These currents can cause erosion and deepening of the channel, making guts deeper than surrounding sea floor. They are often hazardous to navigation due to swift currents, but also serve as important ecological corridors.
In Pictou County, places such as Pine Tree Gut and Little Gut are distinctive hydrographic features that shape tidal flow, navigation, and settlement along the Northumberland Strait.
Note: Not all Hydrographic Features have official place names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some Guts with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
