Terrain Features: Indian Reserve

Fisher's Grant Topographic MapAn Indian Reserve as defined under the Indian Act is land, where the legal title to which it is vested, is in the Crown, set apart for the use and benefit of a First Nation. The creation, naming, and management of Indian Reserves are governed by federal legislation, treaties, and, increasingly, by modern land claim agreements.

The naming process for Indian Reserves involves the First Nation band council, Indigenous Services Canada, and the relevant provincial or territorial naming authority. Names may reflect Indigenous languages, historical figures, or traditional land use.

Some Reserves are populated, and also serve as First Nation communities.
