Description: This great little book providing a brief history of Little Harbour and its surrounding communities (Anderson’s Mountain, Black Point, Boat Harbour, Chance Harbour, King’s Head, Little Harbour and Woodburn).

It begins explaining how First Nations and French settlements occupied the area and then leads into the various early settlers who, over moved to the region over the years.

Most of the details are based on information from family stories that has been passed along to younger generations, combined with other historic documented details from George Patterson’s History of Pictou County, memoirs from various reverends, Nova Scotia Public Archives, George McKenzie’s Pictonians at Home and Abroad, Dr. James M. Cameron’s books, the Wreck of the Melmerby, 100 Years Municipality of Pictou County and Pictonians in Arms (and several other historic books about Pictou County). As one would except, it also makes use of several genealogy resources, and historic material from several newspapers including the Colonial Patriot, Colonial Standard, Eastern Chronicle, the Bee, the Enterprise, the Evening News, and the Pictou Advocate.

Some of the topics and events discussed include the 82nd grant, industries, schools, Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, community center, Parks, both world wars and off course place names. Sometimes you will need to have a little local knowledge to comprehend some stories, as often names and local features are referenced.

This book is a well done summary of the history of the Little Harbour and surrounding areas, and would be especially if you are from the region and can appreciate the local knowledge and geography discussed.
