About Broadway
Broadway is a small rural community located along NS Highway 4 between French River and Kenzieville, , known for its location along a historic travel route, and an evocative name that may have been inspired by New York City or English roots. It was named after a famous street in New York City because it was also located along the main thoroughfare (at the time) between New Glasgow and Antigonish, although some believe it was named after a village in England.
It sits within the Merigomish–French River watershed area, surrounded by farmland, mixed forest, and small streams.
>Donald Cameron was an early settler in 1809. He received a grant of land here in 1818. Other grantees were Donald Robertson in 1814, and William and John Smith in 1816.
A post office was established in 1892.
Population in 1956 was 73.
Current population is hard to pinpoint, as Broadway is no longer a designated census subdivision or population centre. Therefore small rural places like this are now grouped together into larger census areas, so Statistics Canada no longer reports separate counts.
A reasonable estimate for Broadway’s current population would likely be between 55 to 75 residents.
