About Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain is a rural community located along NS Route 347 (Sherbrooke Road) between Meiklefield and Moose River. It was named after William Ross who settled there in 1818.

William Urquhart of Glen Urquhart. Scotland, settled here soon after 1815. John and Donald Munro settled in this di strict about 1817 and Roderick McDougald arrived in 1838.

John McDougald, born in Blue Mountain, was named a justice of the peace in 1879 and served as a member of the first municipal council for Pictou County in 1879.

A Presbyterian log Church was built about 1834 where the Blue Mountain Cemetery is located, , prior to that, the community attended open air services in Gaelic under a large oak tree. It was latter sold and taken down when Welch Free Church was opened in 1854. In 1968 a Cairn was built to commemorate the location of the original church.

A new school was completed in 1877. A postal way office was established in 1848.

Population in 1956 was 146.
