Central West River, Pictou County

The community of Central West River is located west of Greenhill. The name is descriptive of the location about half-way up the river. “West River’ is also used at times. Settlement in the area was started before 1815 at which time the residents including Anthony and William Smith, James Fraser, David McLeod, Joseph Richards, George McConnell and Robert McElhinney received title to their lands out of the escheated Philadelphia Grant.
A Church at West River was completed in 1884. A school was built about 1866, and a postal way office was established in 1841.

Population in 1956 was 133.
