Place Names and Places of Nova Scotia was published in 1967 by the Public Archives of Nova Scotia as a special project to commemorate Canada’s centenary of Confederation. Now it is a reference source available for readers wanting basic, reliable, easily accessible historical information about the cities, towns and villages of Nova Scotia.

Over 2400 communities appear in the Place-Names database, in alphabetical order and accompanied by a brief, concise entry describing community highlights such as first settlement, first churches, first schools, primary industries, significant events and notable citizens.
All of the Pictou County related place name content has been incorporated into the Pictou County Atlas here on our site (among many other place name books and resources), however if you are interested in place names for other Nova Scotia geographies, then we suggest you check it out.
