Glengarry Station is a small rural community that was once a bustling little place with a railway station, post office, watering tank for steam locomotives supplied by water from the Middle River, and a school house.
Named by early Scottish settlers after the famous Glen in Inverness-shire, Scotland. One of the areas many Scottish immigrants migrated to after the battle of Culloden in 1746. The term ‘Glen’ is the Scottish term for a valley, many of witch have a general U-shape and were gouged into existence by huge glaciers that grounded down the mountain side.
Robert Gordon’s was one of the area’s earliest settlers, likely arriving in 1802. By 1873 the population of Glengarry Station reached 150, and maintained that level for many years. By 1956 the number of residents had dropped to 59. It was still a central railway station service during the 1950’s and 60’s.
