Aulds Mountain

Aulds Mountain is located north of the Trans Canada Highway with a spatial extent spread across the communities of Avondale, Piedmont, Kenzieville, and Broadway. Several wind turbines are located here in what is referred to as the Aulds Mountain Wind Farm.

Sutherland Bog

Sutherland Bog is a large wetland located in the community of Mount William, north of the Trans Canada Highway in Pictou County. It is an important geographic feature that contributes to the county’s natural heritage, ecological health, and landscape.  Its terrain is characterized by poorly drained soils, peat deposits, and sphagnum moss, typical of bog ecosystems in Nova Scotia.

Thorburn - Pictou County

Thorburn

Thorburn is a rural community located east of New Glasgow and south of the Trans-Canada Highway. It was once known as Vale Colliery, but the place name was changed in 1886 from an Act of Parliament. The name is made up of “Thor”, the Scandinavian God of Thunder, and “burn” is the Gaelic and Northern English word for brook or small river. A coal mine was opened here in 1872 by the Vale Coal Iron and Manufacturing Company of Montreal on land explored by four members of the McBean family. Houses for workmen and offices were built and equipment installed.

Mount Thom - Pictou County

Mount Thom is located on the Trans-Canada highway along the west boundary line between Pictou and Colchester Counties. It named after Thomas Troop of Truro who with Ephriam Howard, walked through the woods to help the Philadelphia settlers (from the on the brig, Hope) get established in 1767 at West River.

Marshy Hope - Pictou County

Marshy Hope is a rural community located along the Trans-Canada highway, near the boundary between Pictou and Antigonish counties. James Mappel settled here about 1815.

Rossfield - Pictou County

Rossfield

Rossfield is a rural community located south of the Trans-Canada Highway, east of Upper Barneys River. It was named after the Ross family, who settled in this area.

Pleasant Valley - Pictou County

Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley is a rural community located south of the Trans-canada Highway, west of Union Centre. The name is descriptive. Thomas McKenzie, a blacksmith from Gairloch, Ross-shire, Scotland, 1805 and Alexander McDonald were both settled here by 1814.

Sutherlands River - Pictou County

Sutherlands River

Sutherlands River is a rural community is located near the mouth of the Sutherlands River just south of Merigomish Harbour. It was named after John Sutherland who arrived on the ship Hector in 1773 and settled in this area soon after. The land was part of a grant made to Sir John Wentworth in October, 1765.
