Melville is a small coastal community located on the north of River John on the Northumberland Strait along Nova Scotia Trunk 4.

Hodson
Hodson is a rural community located east of River John. It was probably named after settlers, but it is not known for sure. Settlement begun with the Johnson family about 1806 and 1809.
1879 Cape John Map (Section 3)
The 1879 Cape John Map (Section 3) is one of several maps included in the 1879 Historical Atlas of Pictou County. It shows the basic topographic features of the community along with with prominent land owners and locations of buildings.
