Beaver Lake
Beaver Lake is a common name, and there are two lakes in Pictou County with that name, and there are actually over a dozen lakes in Canada with this name. One of the Beaver Lakes is located west of Hunters lake and flows into the East River. The other is located south east of McKinnon Lake, this one flows south eventually into West River St. Marys,
Springville
Springville is a rural community located between Bridgeville and Churchville. Located along the East River, that was well known for its beautiful scenery, it was also know at the time for its abundant rich deposits of iron and lime.
Much like other parts of Pictou County, this area was settled mostly by immigrants from Scotland, seeking a better life as Scottish lairds abandoned most of their people following the battle of Culloden.
Lorne
Lorne is a rural community located in the East River Valley about half way between Middle River and West Branch, East River. An early name for the area was Big Brook, but this was changed by the locals in 1878, in honor of the Governor General, the Marquis of Lorne, who was married to Princess Louise (Queen Victoria’s daughter).
Millstream
Millstream is a rural community located north of Centredale and west of Springville . There once was a large saw mill, a grain mill, furniture factory, blacksmith, and a log church located here. Stan Roger’s (famous Maritime Singer) father and uncles operated a mill called Rogers Mills here during the 30s and 40s. Find out more about Millstream ….
Bridgeville
Bridgeville is a small rural community located along Route 348 in the East River Valley south-east of Grants Lake. It was probably named because of one of the principal bridges that crossed the East River was built here. Settlement in this area began about 1785.
St. Pauls
St. Pauls is a is a rural community in Pictou County located on the upper East River.
Glencoe
Glencoe is a rural community in Pictou County located on the upper East River between the communities of St.Pauls and Sunny Brae. It was named after a small valley in Argyleshire, Scotland.
