Sawmill Brook

Sawmill Brook, a small fresh water tributary that originates at the base of Fitzpatricks Mountain and flows north east through the communities of Millsville , Scotsburn, Hardwood Hill and Lyons Brook before emptying into the West River of Pictou. William Kennedy, one of the grantees of Truro, moved and settled, at Sawmill Brook. He erected one of the first sawmills here in 1769. John McKenzie started the Sawmill Brook sandstone quarry around 1830. It produced stone that was used locally as well as shipped to further places like Halifax and Charlottetown.

Rockfield is a small rural community located south of Scotsburn and west of Durham. Settled in the 19th century by Scottish immigrants, the area developed around small farms. The name was given by an Act of Parliament in 1885, and prior to that was known as the settlement of Auclein Caim. MacLeods Meadow is a small distinctive low-lying open grassland landscape located east of Big Meadow, spanning across the rolling uplands of the communities of Meadowville, Heathbell, and Scotsburn. The area is characterized by mixed forest, cleared farmland, and small watercourses. Meadows like this one were historically important for grazing livestock, hay production, and as open clearings within otherwise wooded terrain.

Scotsburn

Scotsburn is a rural community located west of Durham and south of Heathbell. It was once known as known as Rogers Hill but was renamed by an Act of Parliament in 1867. It was called Rogers Hill after John Rogers (one of the settlers to arrive from Philadelphia) whose farm lot was here in the late 1700’s. The name was proposed by Hugh Ross whose birth place in Scotland, was named Scotsburn, meaning “Brook of the Scots.”
