Ram Island

Ram Island, is a small island located along the south side of Caribou Island near Mackenzie Point. It was formerly known as Mackenzie Island, until an official name change in 1970.

Caribou Island

Caribou Island is located on the north side of Caribou Harbour along the Northumberland Strait. The Mi’kmaq name was “Komoogun-uk” meaning where birds are decoyed. William Rodgers from Ireland first settled here about 1803. A Lighthouse at Gull Point on the north east end of the Island, it was first built in 1868. The name refers to both a terrain feature and the community.

Caribou Harbour

Caribou Harbour is part of a larger geography that includes Caribou Island, Central Caribou, and Caribou River. It is historically significant to Pictou County and an important port offering ferry services, commercial fishing, recreational opportunities, and a notable maritime climate. Caribou Harbour was explored and described on early maps by Nicholas Denys in the 1660s.
