Roys Gut is a small tidal passage situated along the Egerton shoreline of Merigomish Harbour, east of Governor Head. Like many other “guts” located along the Northumberland Strait, it is a narrow, sheltered channel where tidal waters move between low-lying coastal features. The surrounding landscape is characterized by salt marsh, mixed forest, and gently sloping shoreline, contributing to the harbour’s well‑known ecological richness.
Governor Head is a small but prominent coastal headland located in the community of Egerton. Formed from the region’s characteristic low, rocky shoreline, the point marks part of the outer harbour and has long functioned as a recognizable geographic landmark for small‑craft navigation and local marine activity. Its position offers clear sightlines across Merigomish Harbour toward the Northumberland Strait, contributing to its role as a traditional reference point within the coastal landscape.
Point Betty is located at the east end of Olding Island, protruding out into Merigomish Harbour. The area is characterized by its natural and marine landscape, important for both recreational boating and local wildlife, and especially birds that frequenting the islands sandbars.
French Point is located at the mouth of the French River, along the east side, across from Burying Ground Point. It is referenced as French Head on the Crown Land Grant map.
Burying Ground Point is located at the mouth of the French River, along the west side, across from French Point.
Warrior Reef is a low-lying shoal feature situated in Merigomish Harbour, lying between Big Merigomish Island and Olding Island. Like many of the harbour’s reefs and shoals, Warrior Reef reflects the complex glacial and tidal processes that shaped the coastline in Pictou County.
Dulse Rocks is located just off of Olding Island in Merigomish Harbour.
Olding Island, is a large island located in the sheltered waters of Merigomish Harbour. The island is also sometimes referred to as Point Betty Island. The island belongs to a coastal landscape long used by Indigenous peoples and later by settlers who fished, foraged, and navigated these waters.
