Smalls Brook is a small fresh water tributary that originates in the Frasers Mountain area and flows east through the communities of Pine Tree and Woodburn, and then empties into Merigomish Harbour, north of Quarry Island. Historically, the name was originally known as “Small Brook”, but later standardized to Smalls Brook in 1976 by the Geographical Names Board of Canada

Pine Tree Gut is located between the communities of Pine Tree and Sutherlands River, on the south side of Quarry Island, where Pine Tree Brook empties into Merigomish Harbour.

Pine Tree is located on Pine Tree Brook near the head of Merigomish Harbour. The place received its name before 1809 probably because of a prominent pine tree which was used as a landmark. Daniel Fraser received a grant here in 1809.
