Granton - Pictou County

Granton

The community of Granton is located on the east side of the Middle River between Mount William and Sylvester. It was named after a seaport in, Scotland. Granton is home to a Michelin a tire production facility and a SPCA animal shelter.

Westville - Pictou County

Westville

Westville is one of five towns in Pictou County, it is located south west of Stellarton. The area was originally known as Acadia Village but was renamed to Westville at a public meeting in 1868, probably because it was the westernmost of the East River mining towns. The town was incorporated in August, 1894.

Loch Broom - Pictou County

Loch Broom

Loch Broom is a rural community located directly between the Middle River and the West River. It was first settled by Alexander Cameron (who came on the ship Hector) in 1773 and named for its harbour’s approach resembling Loch Broom in Inverness-shire, Scotland. It is believed that one of the first churches in Pictou County was built here in 1787.

Mount William - Pictou County

Mount William

Mount William is a community located about halfway between the East River and Middle River branches of Pictou Harbour. It may have been named after either William Porter or William Fraser who received grants here or after William Porter’s father of the same name.

Sylvester - Pictou County

Sylvester

Sylvester is a rural community located along the Middle River north of Green Hill. It was named after an early settler.

Union Centre - Pictou County

Union Centre

Union Centre is a rural community located south of Westville. It may have been so named because it was one of the main crossings over the Middle River and thus a junction or centre of roads from East and West Rivers as well as of roads leading up both sides of the Middle River.

1879 Abercrombie Map (Section 12) is one of the several maps included in the 1879 Historical Atlas of Pictou County. It shows the basic topographic features of the community along with with prominent land owners and locations of buildings. This page also include sections 23 (Westville) and the North Parts of Sections 17 and 18.

Bear Brook - Pictou County

Bear Brook

There are two brooks in Pictou County known as Bear Brook, one flows from the Mount William area to Alma into the Middle River of Pictou; & the second flows south west towards Barneys River Station into Barneys River.
