Dalhousie Mountain Nature Reserve, located in the community of Mount Thom, was designated as a Conservation Area by the Province of Nova Scotia in 2015. It is a 46‑hectare protected area that preserves rich mixed‑wood forest and several rare plant species, including round‑leaved hepatica, a woodland herb found in only a handful of Nova Scotia locations.
Mount Ephraim is an elevated terrain feature located between Mount Thom and Dalhousie Mountain in western Pictou County. Its within one of the county’s most rugged upland regions, where steep slopes, forested ridges, and high plateaus define the landscape.
Lower Mount Thom is located north of the Trans Canada Highway along Highway 4 (Pictou Road) in the community of Mount Thom. It sits on the upland slopes that form part of the county’s interior highlands, offering a mix of rural settlement, forested terrain, and long-standing transportation routes.
Upper Mount Thom is a small rural locality located north of the Trans Canada Highway in the community of Mount Thom. It’s a quiet, wooded area with deep geographic roots and a long association with the region’s transportation corridors and interior highlands.
Mount Thom is located on the Trans-Canada highway along the west boundary line between Pictou and Colchester Counties. It named after Thomas Troop of Truro who with Ephriam Howard, walked through the woods to help the Philadelphia settlers (from the on the brig, Hope) get established in 1767 at West River.
Watervale is a rural area located along the West River, south east of Lower Mount Thom and west of New Gairloch. The name of the place is considered to be chosen for descriptive reasons. William Cameron emigrated from Inverness-shire and settled here sometime around 1801. In 1877 a factory for manufacturing rakes, implements, and furniture was operated by Samuel Archibald & Company in the area.
