Baileys Brook Pictou County

Baileys Brook

Baileys Brook is a rural community located south of the Ponds. The area was once referred to as Upper Bailey’s Brook named after John Baillie, a disbanded soldier from the 82nd Regiment, who settled at the mouth of Bailey’s Brook about 1788. The area was so named before 1809 and at the time the spelling was “Ballies Brook.” The spelling for the name of the community actually changed a few times over the years (Baillie Brook, Bailey Brook, Bailey’s Brook  and now Baileys Brook).

Lismore

Lismore is a rural coastal community located between the Ponds and Knoydart along NS Highway 245 (Sunrise Trail). The Gaelic name for the community is Lios Mòr, meaning the ‘Great Garden’ and was named after its similarity to Lismore, Scotland. The area was once referred to as Lower Bailey’s Brook named after John John Baillie, a disbanded soldier from the 82nd Regiment, who settled al the mouth of the Bailey’s Brook (which empties into Lismore Harbour). in 1788 Lismore was a settlement of Highland Catholics from Scotland, starting with John Baillie, Duncan Chisholm, Alexander Chisholm and John Gault, all whom received land grants in 1792.

Knoydart - Pictou County

Knoydart is a rural coastal community located along NS route 245 (Sunrise Trail ) between Lismore and the eastern boundary between Pictou and Antigonish Counties. It was named after a place in Inverness-shire, Scotland.

Ponds - Pictou County

Ponds

Ponds is a rural community located west of Lismore. The name was prompted by natural features. John Smith settled here about 1791.

The 1879 Lismore Map is one of the several maps included in the 1879 Historical Atlas of Pictou County. It shows the basic topographic features of the community along with with prominent land owners and locations of buildings. It also contains the communities of Big Island, the Ponds, Knoydart, Ardeness and Baileys Brook.
