Middle Brook

Middle Brook

Middle Brook is a small woodland stream in the Indian Lake Woodland Area, flowing south through dense Acadian forest before joining the Barneys River system. It plays a small but important role in the Barneys River watershed, contributing freshwater from upland wetlands and forest runoff, seasonal water regulation, especially during spring melt, and habitat connectivity for aquatic species moving between headwater streams and the main river.

Aulds Mountain is located north of the Trans Canada Highway with a spatial extent spread across the communities of Avondale, Piedmont, Kenzieville, and Broadway. Several wind turbines are located here in what is referred to as the Aulds Mountain Wind Farm.

Kenzieville is located between Barneys River Station and Upper Barneys River. It was named after William McKenzie who emigrated from Sutherlandshire, Scotland, in 1803.

Upper Barneys River

Upper Barneys River is a small rural community located south of the Trans Canada Highway south of Kenzieville. The area was named after Barnabas McGee who was the first settler in Merigomish township about 1776.

Broadway - Pctou County

Broadway is a rural community located along NS Highway 4 between French River and Kenzieville.  It may have been so named after a famous street in New York City or because it was located along the main thoroughfare (at the time) between New Glasgow and Antigonish or after a village in England.

The 1879 Kenzieville Map (Section 20) is one of the several maps included in the 1879 Historical Atlas of Pictou County. It shows the basic topographic features of the community along with with prominent land owners and locations of buildings. Section 20 map also featured the communities of Avondale, Piedmont, Barneys River, and Lower Barneys River.
