Caribou Reef is located just off the north easterly tip of Caribou Island, in the Northumberland Strait, and one of the reasons a light-house beacon is placed at Gull Point.

Gull Spit

Gull Spit is a small sandy strip of land (about half a kilometer) located along the south side of Caribou Island, that extends south into Caribou Harbour. It is a home for many species of sea birds and also a sandy beach used by locals.

Caribou Island is located on the north side of Caribou Harbour along the Northumberland Strait. The Mi’kmaq name was “Komoogun-uk” meaning where birds are decoyed. William Rodgers from Ireland first settled here about 1803. A Lighthouse at Gull Point on the north east end of the Island, it was first built in 1868. The name refers to both a terrain feature and the community.
