Salt Springs is rural a area is located on the upper West River near the foot of Mount Thom. Saline springs bubbling up from the foot of Mount Thom inspired the name. Between 1813 and 1823, attempts were made to recover some of this salt.

Sunny Brae - Pictou County

Sunny Brae

Sunny Brae is a rural community located near the head of the East Branch of East River. It has been variously known as Pleasant Valley, Frasers Mills and Upper Settlement. The place name Sunny Brae is said to have been suggested in 1879 by W. L. Kennedy. “Brae” is a Scottish term meaning “hillside or slope.”

Lovat is a rural community located south east of Salt Springs between the Middle and West Rivers. It was named after a place in Inverness, Scotland, (the seat of the Fraser clan).

Donald Cameron and John McKenzie settled here in 1810. Grants of land were made to Roderick McKenzie in 1813, to John McKay in 1814, to  James Fraser in 1815 and to Hector McKenzie in 1815.

Limerock - Pictou County

Limerock is a rural community  located along the West River, between Greenhill and Salt Springs. The name was to the area after limestone was discovered there.

Hopewell, Pictou County

Hopewell

Hopewell is a rural community located along the West Branch of the East River. It was named after the ship that brought Alexander McNutt and the Ulster settlers to Colchester County in 1761. An early name for the area was Milltown from the John Duffs grist mill.
