Roys Gut

Roys Gut is a small tidal passage situated along the Egerton shoreline of Merigomish Harbour, east of Governor Head. Like many other “guts” located along the Northumberland Strait, it is a narrow, sheltered channel where tidal waters move between low-lying coastal features. The surrounding landscape is characterized by salt marsh, mixed forest, and gently sloping shoreline, contributing to the harbour’s well‑known ecological richness.

Governor Head

Governor Head is a small but prominent coastal headland located in the community of Egerton. Formed from the region’s characteristic low, rocky shoreline, the point marks part of the outer harbour and has long functioned as a recognizable geographic landmark for small‑craft navigation and local marine activity. Its position offers clear sightlines across Merigomish Harbour toward the Northumberland Strait, contributing to its role as a traditional reference point within the coastal landscape.

Merigomish Harbour is a charming coastal destination that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and cultural experiences. Starting between Big Merigomish Island and Kings Head, the harbour extends several kilometres inland, branching into a maze of coves, tidal channels, and small islands such as the Pig Islands and French Channel.

It is located within several Pictou County communities including Big Island, Merigomish, Lower Barneys River, Kings Head, Egerton, Sutherlands River, and Woodburn and feeds into the Northumberland Strait. The harbour itself extends about eight kilometers to the east and nearly six kilometers to the southwest, featuring numerous islands within it. Merigomish

Merigomish is a rural community located on the south side of Merigomish Harbour between Egerton and Lower Barneys River along the Sunrise Trail.  Early one it was known as Malegonish, originating from the Mi’kmaq word “Mallegomichk” (meaning the merrymaking place). This was one of the popular Mi’kmaq gathering areas.

Egerton

Egerton is a rural community located between Sutherlands River and Merigomish along NS Route 245 (Sunrise Trail). It may have been named after Francis Egerton, third Duke of Bridgewater, known as the Father of British Inland Navigation. Egerton was also the name of one of the three townships that when Pictou County was subdivided into in 1806. (the other two being Pictou and Maxwelton). 

Sometime during the early 19th century, a Captain T. Egerton obtained a reservation of five hundred acres near the Egerton-Maxwellton township line. The land was granted in 1765 but settlement probably began in the 1780’s or 1790’s.

St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church was built in 1865.

Population in 1956 was 103.

Egerton was also the name of one of the three townships that when Pictou County was subdivided into in 18067 (the other two being Pictou and Maxwelton).

The 1879 Merigomish Map (sections 21 and 24) is one of the several maps included in the 1879 Historical Atlas of Pictou County. It shows the basic topographic features of the community along with with prominent land owners and locations of buildings. It also contains the communities of Egerton, Piedmont, Telford, French River, Meiklefield, and Woodfield.
