The name Caribou Island refers to both a terrain feature and a community. The rural coastal community of Caribou Island is located on the north side of Caribou Harbour on Caribou Island. The Mi’kmaq name for Caribou Island was “Komoogun-uk” where birds are decoyed. William Rodgers who came to Nova Scotia from Ireland about 1769 settled at Caribou Island about 1803.
