East Branch River John is one of two major branches of River John. Originating in the communities of Plainfield and Meadowville, then flows west through the communities of Black River and East Branch eventually it joins the West Branch to form the main River John, which eventually empties into John Bay.
Black River is a small rural community in Pictou County located north of Plainfield. The name Black River in Pictou County also refers to the hydrographic feature: River, a natural flowing freshwater watercourse. Two different Black Rivers in Pictou County exist, both in the west part of the county.
