Big Merigomish Island is a large island in Merigomish Harbour, connected to the main land via large sand spit. Often referred to many as Big Island (although that is the official name of the community located on the island and not the island itself, it was also previously known as both Robinsons Island and Merigomish Island. The Mi’kmaq name for the area was “Kikchesebeiik” meaning a passage close to land or close inshore.
Pig Islands are a small group of inhabited islands located along the south of Big Island in Merigomish Harbour. The small collection of islands are are low-lying and wooded, helping to add to the sheltered character of the channel, making them a recognizable landmark in the complex estuarine landscape of Merigomish Harbour.
French Channel refers to a small tidal water way that flows in between Robinson Point and Pig Islands south of Big Island in Merigomish Harbour.
