Kenneth Point - Pictou County

Kenneth Point

in Point, Terrain Feature

Kenneth Point is located on the south side of Caribou Island between MacCarthys Point and Mackenzie point, extending out into the Caribou Harbour. It was labeled as Harris Point on the 1879 map, possibly because the land grant here at that time was to Matthew Harris.

Mackenzie Point is a small headland located along the south side of Caribou Island near Hansons Cove, extending out into Caribou Harbour. Several Mackenzie families  held land grants in this area.

Town of Pictou

Pictou is a small a historic Town in Pictou County located along the west side of Pictou Harbour. The name is believed to be derived from the Mi’kmaq word “Piktook” meaning a large explosion, and references the noise made by large waves. It is also believed that it could be a corruption of Poictou, an old province in France. The town was laid out in 1788 and the first house was built about 1790.

Dufferin, Pictou County

Dufferin

in Locality

Dufferin is a locality located along Dufferin Road in the community of Sundridge, near the head of the Caribou River.  It was named after the Earl of Dufferin, Governor-General of Canada, 1872 to 1878. 
At one time, it was a busy area due to being located the rail line of the Canadian National Railways between Pictou and Oxford Junction (the rail has been removed, and now is part of the Trans Canada Trail).
