Merigomish Harbour 31

Merigomish Harbour Indian Reserve No. 31 (often referred to as Merigomish Harbour 31) located within the sheltered waters of Merigomish Harbour, is a small Indian Reserve, officially recognized under the Indian Act of Canada. Under jurisdiction of the federal government, it is managed in accordance with the Canada Lands Surveys Act and related legislation, but administratively managed by Pictou Landing First Nation. Merigomish Harbour 31 consists of two islands; Indian Island and Muless Island. It is considered to be an unpopulated Reserve, although it does contain many seasonal dwellings on both of the islands and a historic church (Saint Anne’s Mission Church) is located on Indian Island.

The East River of Pictou is a major rivers flowing through Pictou County, featuring remarkable historic, ecological, and recreational value. Towns and communities located along the East River include Sunny Brae, Stellarton, New Glasgow, Trenton, Abercrombie, and Pictou Landing and a few others. It is well known for fishing, especially for sea-run trout such as brook, brown, and sea trout, but also striped bass, smallmouth bass, and white perch.

Grant Lake is  located in Millstream, just west of the Centerdale Road. It was named after the Grant family, prominent early Scottish immigrants who settled in Pictou County. James Grant, from Inverness, Scotland, established both a grist mill and sawmill at Grant Lake in the late 18th century. It is known to be a great recreational fishing spot with easy access, containing brook trout, rainbow trout, and perch.

Eden Lake is located in the Garden of Eden area west of Sherbrooke Road (route 347). It is about 181.7 hectares in size, has a mean depth of 7.8 m, with its deepest part being just over 17 metres.

Stellarton - Pictou County Populated Places

Town of Stellarton

Stellarton is one of the five Pictou County Towns, it is located along the East River south of the Town of New Glasgow.  It was named after a bed of coal known as “stellar” or “oil” coal. The original name for the area was Albion Mines, the name given by the General Mining Association to their collieries in 1827. At a public meeting held in 1870, the place was renamed to “Stellarton” to represent the high-oil content coal known as Stella coal that was abundance in this area.

Stellarton has a rich history in coal mining and is the hometown of Sobeys, a Canadian Grocery icon.

Big Merigomish Island

Big Merigomish Island

Big Merigomish Island is a large island in Merigomish Harbour, connected to the main land via large sand spit. Often referred to many as Big Island (although that is the official name of the community located on the island and not the island itself, it was also previously known as both Robinsons Island and Merigomish Island. The Mi’kmaq name for the area was “Kikchesebeiik” meaning a passage close to land or close inshore.
