Merigomish Harbour 31

Merigomish Harbour Indian Reserve No. 31 (often referred to as Merigomish Harbour 31) located within the sheltered waters of Merigomish Harbour, is a small Indian Reserve, officially recognized under the Indian Act of Canada. Under jurisdiction of the federal government, it is managed in accordance with the Canada Lands Surveys Act and related legislation, but administratively managed by Pictou Landing First Nation. Merigomish Harbour 31 consists of two islands; Indian Island and Muless Island. It is considered to be an unpopulated Reserve, although it does contain many seasonal dwellings on both of the islands and a historic church (Saint Anne’s Mission Church) is located on Indian Island.

Savage Cove

Savage Cove is a small, sheltered inlet along the south side of Big Merigomish Island, opening into the protected waters of Merigomish Harbour. Marked on modern topographic maps and noted in local geographic references, the cove lies close to Savage Point, another feature on the island’s southern shoreline.

Historical mapping, including the 1842 Merigomish Harbour map depicts this stretch of coast, showing how coves like Savage provided natural landing places for small vessels and sheltered access to the island’s interior.

Smashem Head

Smashem Head is a small but distinctive headland on the southern shore of Big Merigomish Island, where it projects into the sheltered waters of Merigomish Harbour.

 The unusual name comes from Robert Stewart, an early Robertson Island (now Big Merigomish Island) settler who was known for his favorite expression “smashem” used to describe battle scenes.

Olding Island, is a large island located in the sheltered waters of Merigomish Harbour. The island is also sometimes referred to as Point Betty Island. The island belongs to a coastal landscape long used by Indigenous peoples and later by settlers who fished, foraged, and navigated these waters.

Muless Island is a small coastal island located in Merigomish Harbour, just south of Quarry Island. It is part of the islands included in Merigomish Harbour Indian Reserve 31 (part of the Pictou Landing First Nation) established in 1865.
