The East Branch French River is a tributary of the French River that flows south through upland interiors near the communities of French River and Broadway, and eventual empties into Merigomish Harbour. It is a smaller hydrographic feature than the East River of Pictou, but it still plays an important role in local settlement history, hydrology, and land use.
Browning Brook is a small fresh water stream located in the communities of French River and Broadway. It starts around Carews Lake and then flows south into French River. While not a major stream brooks like Browning are crucial for maintaining ecological balance, filtering runoff, and sustaining groundwater recharge.

Broadway is a rural community located along NS Highway 4 between French River and Kenzieville. It may have been so named after a famous street in New York City or because it was located along the main thoroughfare (at the time) between New Glasgow and Antigonish or after a village in England.
