From its headwaters east of Little Lake, the brook flows north through wooded and agricultural landscapes, eventually emptying into the East River near the Bridgeville area.

The valley includes settlements such as Churchville,  St.Pauls and Sunny Brae, with Iron Rock nestled among them.

Blanchard Brook

Blanchard Brook is a small low order tributary in the East River watershed. It originates in upland areas near Blanchard Road area flows south through mixed forest and rural parcels in the community of Sunny Brae and empties into the East River.

The brook’s flow regime is typical of small Nova Scotia streams, seasonal high flows in spring and after heavy rain, lower baseflows in late summer, and it contributes to local wetland and riparian habitats. The brook and nearby community of Blanchard Road are named after Colonel Blanchard of Truro who cut a road through the area to access land holdings in the area.

Sunny Brae

Sunny Brae is a rural community located near the head of the East Branch of East River. It has been variously known as Pleasant Valley, Frasers Mills and Upper Settlement. The place name Sunny Brae is said to have been suggested in 1879 by W. L. Kennedy. “Brae” is a Scottish term meaning “hillside or slope.”
