Woodfield is a rural community located on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway, just north west of Meadow Springs, near the head of the French River. The name was probably prompted by natural characteristics from the area.

John Thompson and Valentine Laws arrived from North Shields, England in 1815 and asked for land on which to settle in July. Later the same year they both received grants of land here. John McKinnon received a grant of two hundred acres here in 1863.
