West River of Pictou
The West River of Pictou is one of the major rivers flowing through Pictou County, featuring remarkable historic, ecological, and recreational value.
As the name indicates, it is located within the western part of the county, originateing around the Lansdowne area and flows north emptying into Pictou Harbour, and then eventually into the Northumberland Strait.
Communities, such as Durham and Central West River, located along the river; are known for hardwood forests, rolling hills, and fertile farmland, thanks to the West River of Pictou.
It is well known for fishing, especially for sea-run trout such as brook, brown, and sea trout, but also striped bass, smallmouth bass, and white perch.
Note: West River Pictou is a Special Trout Management Area. People should refer to the most recent edition of the Nova Scotia Anglers’ Handbook for details regarding any specific regulations before fishing in this area.
