About West Barneys River
West Barneys River a major branch of Barneys River. It originates in the Indian Lake area and then flows north through the communities of Marsh, Laggan, Upper Barneys River, Kenzieville, Barneys River Station, and Avondale.
It was named after Barnabas McGee, one of the early settlers who landed here in the late 1770s. It was formerly known as West Barney’s River until an official name change in 1965.
H. H. Bruce’s History of Barneys River Early Days in East Pictou (1886) provides vivid accounts of pioneer life, describing hardships, oral traditions, and genealogical sketches of families such as the Stewarts, Gordons, McLeans, McKays, and Sutherlands.
