About Welsford
Welsford, a rural area located south of the mouth of the River John was once formally known as River John Village. The name of the place was later changed to Welsford by an Act of Parliament in 1858, to honor of Major Augustus Welsford who was killed at the storming of the Redan at Sebastopol 1855, during the Crimean War.
There was a saw and grist mill just north of the present village site along the river in 1806.
Thomas McKenzie settled here about 1812.
In 1879 there was a school-house and several mills here, with a tannery owned by Robert Sutherland who settled here in 1839.
Population in 1956 was 94.
