Watervale is a rural area located along the West River, south east of Lower Mount Thom and west of New Gairloch. The name of the place is considered to be chosen for descriptive reasons.
William Cameron emigrated from Inverness-shire and settled here sometime around 1801 . Donald Campbell came from Sutherlandshire in 1811 and settled here soon after that.
John Fraser and David McKenzie, from Scotland also received grants here in 1814 and in 1817 respectively. Grants were provided to Angus McKay, Donald and William McLeod, and Murdock McKenzie in 1815.
Alexander “Sandy” McRae built and operated a gristmill near Watervale. Around 1855, he built a gristmill and sawmill on the Toney River.
In 1877 a factory for manufacturing rakes, implements, and furniture was operated by Samuel Archibald & Company in the area
Population in 1956 was 74.
