About Upper Barneys River
Upper Barneys River is a small rural community located south of the Trans Canada Highway south of Kenzieville.
The area was named after Barnabas McGee who was the first settler in Merigomish township about 1776. The other communities named after Barnabas McGee is Lower Barneys River, Barneys River Station and Middle Barneys River.
It is situated along the Barneys River, which flows through the eastern part of the county. The area is characterized by its scenic natural beauty, including the nearby Barneys River Nature Reserve, which protects old-growth hardwood forests in the watershed. This nature reserve, established by the Government of Nova Scotia, highlights the ecological significance of the region.
