Map Map

Topographic maps provide detailed information of features of a terrain accurately and to scale, on a two-dimensional plain. These types of maps contain details about terrain relief, hydrography (lakes, rivers etc.), forest cover, rural and populated areas, transportation routes, and various other man-made features. They make excellent planning tool and guides, and are used for a variety of different applications, from recreational uses like camping, fishing and hunting to urban planning, and resource management.

The 1:50,000 topographic map series are medium‑scale, highly practical maps where 1 cm on the map equals 500 m on the ground (so 2 cm = 1 km); it balances regional coverage with useful terrain detail.

What you can expect to see on a 1:50k topographic map

  • Terrain relief: contour lines showing elevation and landform shape; contour spacing varies with terrain but the map standard specifies consistent intervals for readability (commonly set by national map standards).
  • Hydrography: lakes, rivers, streams, wetlands and drainage patterns shown clearly.
  • Vegetation and land cover: forested areas, open ground, and marshes indicated by standard symbols and shading.
  • Human features: roads (major and secondary), trails, buildings, railways, power lines, and administrative boundaries are mapped for navigation and planning.
  • Grids and orientation: UTM grid ticks and north arrows (true/magnetic) are provided to support compass and GPS use.
