About Sunnybrae Game Sanctuary
The Sunnybrae Game Sanctuary is a large protected wildlife area in Pictou County, established in 1930. It helps protect woodlands, lakes, and wetlands near the community of Sunny Brae, offering important habitat for wildlife.
The Boy Scouts Association of Canada requested that the area be reserved for scouting and wildlife protection. The Province of Nova Scotia agreed, and the land became a designated game sanctuary in 1930. A Boy Scout camp located at McKinnon Lake is situated in the middle of the sanctuary.
The sanctuary has since remained a long‑standing part of Nova Scotia’s wildlife‑management system, protecting habitat for game species and supporting outdoor education and low‑impact recreation. It’s mixture of woodlands, lakes, and wetlands provides ideal habitat suitable for: white‑tailed deer, small mammals, waterfowl and wetland birds, and amphibians and reptiles associated with bog and lake environments in Nova Scotia.
