Seal Creek, Pictou County

Seal Creek is a small tidal watercourse located in the community of Marshville east of Rocky Point, and flows northward into Amet Sound  along the Northumberland Strait.

While there is no definitive historical record confirming that Seal Creek was named specifically because someone saw a seal there. This naming pattern was common in early Nova Scotia history, where places such as Seal Islands in Yarmouth County for example were named by explorers who observed a significant presence of seals in that area. And according to many local place-names in Nova Scotia, abundant wildlife often served as inspiration for naming various sites.

While not a large watercourse, its marshy outlet provides important habitat for shorebirds, waterfowl, and intertidal species, reflecting the broader ecological character of the Pictou County coast. The surrounding saltmarshes act as natural buffers, filtering water and supporting biodiversity, while also shaping the cultural landscape of Marshville, where fishing, farming, and recreation have long coexisted.

Together with nearby features like Rocky Point, Angel Point, and Rushtons Beach, Seal Creek helps tell the story of how natural landforms, settlement history, and ecological processes intertwine along the Northumberland Strait.
