About Salisbury Point
Salisbury Point is a small significant headland on the Cape John peninsula located located south of Archibalds Point along the shores of John Bay in the community of Cape John.
This region was originally referred to as Back Shore due to its geographic location in relation to the village of River John, and also Wenjooteamwakade (meaning the cow pasture) by the Mi’kmaq.
Geologically, Salisbury Point lies within the Cape John Formation of the Pictou Group, a late Carboniferous to early Permian unit characterized by folded and faulted beds of sandstone, shale, and conglomerate that define much of the peninsula’s rugged coastal profile. Historically, the point would have served as a familiar landmark for fishers and coastal travelers navigating the entrance to the River John estuary, while also marking the southern approach to Cape John itself.
