Rossfield - Pictou County

Rossfield is a rural community located south of the Trans-Canada Highway, east of Upper Barneys River. It was named after the Ross family, who settled in this area.

Hugh Ross arrived in 1822 and two years after he had settled, built his house and barn and began to improve the land, he died. His heirs, Isabel, Donald Christian, Alexander and Joseph Ross. and John and Catherine Gordon received a 100 acre grant in 1828.

John Gordon had emigrated from North Britain in 1817. William McKenzie and Robert Stewart also received lots here in 1828. McKenzie evidently sold his lot to Thomas Ross by 1879. By December, 1822 “the new settlers on the west branch of Barneys River” had called their settlement “Gordon Bush” possibly after John Gordon.

Alexander Sutherland settled in this area about 1821. He began to put up a grist mill in 1831 and had it mostly finished by February, 1833, at which time he reported in a petition that there were about thirty new settlers on the West Branch.

A new school was built at Rossfield in 1895.
