About Rockfield
Rockfield is a small rural community located south of Scotsburn and west of Durham. Settled in the 19th century by Scottish immigrants, the area developed around small farms.
Most people access the community via Rockfield Road (from the east or west), or Union Road (from the south) via Nova Scotia Highway 376.
The name was given by an Act of Parliament in 1885, and prior to that was known as the settlement of Auclein Caim. The word Caim is a variant of the biblical name Cain, that encompasses a cultural symbol often linked to protection and community.
Glacial till and post-glacial deposits dominate the surface; soils are typically stony loams suitable for mixed farming but variable in depth.
Quarry Brook, a small fresh water tributary originates in the community and flows north east through the communities of Durham, Rogers Hill, and Lyons Brook before eventually emptying into the West River of Pictou.
