About Plymouth

Plymouth is a rural community located south of Stellarton near the East River. Settlements along the East River started shortly after the arrival of the Ship Hector in 1773.

Colin McKenzie emigrated from Scotland in 1773 and received a 350 acre grant on East River Pictou in 1783. William McLeod also received a grant here in 1783 and both were settled by 1789. John McKenzie obtained a grant in 1789.

The communities we know as Riverton and Plymouth was originally one area and it was known as “Fish Pools” because of how splendid the trout fishing in the deep pools of the river was. The deepest one was near the big rock on the farm that became known to locals as Fish Pools Farm.

Around 1877, the population of the area started to swell, and it was decided that the area would split into 2 communities, one along each side of the river. An early name for the area was Irishtown until 1873 when both Irishtown and Churchtown became Plymouth.

A Presbyterian Church was built in 1803.

Plymouth is home to the site of the Westray Mine disaster in 1992, where a methane gas explosion down in the mine killed 26 miners.

Population in 1956 was Plymouth 291
