Swamps are a geographic term often referring to a forested wetland terrain feature, permanently or seasonally saturated with water and dominated by trees or tall shrubs. Unlike a meadow or bog which are typically open grassland with limited tree cover, a swamp is defined by its woody vegetation and waterlogged soils.
Swamps form in areas of poor drainage, floodplains, or near lakes and rivers. They may contain standing water, pools, or hummocky terrain with alternating wet and dry patches.
Although there are many swampy terrain located throughout Pictou County, there is only one that is officially included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database.

Juniper Swamp is located in the Gully Lake Wilderness Area (just inside the western county boundary line), and is supplied with fresh water flowing from Juniper Brook. This area is valued for its ecological richness, recreational opportunities, and conservation significance, offering visitors a chance to experience some of the province’s best-preserved wilderness.
