Pictou County Atlas

Terrain Features: Bog

Bogs are a geographic term referring to a type of wetland terrain feature characterized by waterlogged, acidic, nutrient-poor soils and the accumulation of peat (partially decayed plant matter). Unlike a meadow, which is grassy and fertile, but it shares some traits with a swamp, though swamps are considered to be forested wetlands with richer soils. So, while a bog and a swamp are both wetlands, they differ in vegetation and soil fertility.

Note: Not all Terrain Features have official place names. Even there are many bogs located throughout Pictou County, very few have names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.
