Terrain Features: Rocks
Rocks are solid, exposed or semi-submerged terrain features that can occur along coastlines or offshore. They differ from reefs and shoals in their composition and formation, though all three can present hazards to boats.
Often visible at low tides but submerged at high tide, making them dangerous for navigation. On nautical charts, rocks are carefully symbolized with depth soundings and hazard markers, while on topographic maps, they may be noted as coastal outcrops or inland boulders.
In Pictou County, rocks are common along the Northumberland Strait and around islands such as Pictou Island and Caribou Island. Offshore features like scattered rocky outcrops near Merigomish Harbour are marked on charts because they influence currents and pose risks to vessels.
Note: Not all Terrain Features have official place names. Even there are many Rocks located throughout Pictou County, very few have names included in the Canadian Geographic Names Database., if you know of some with local names that we have missed, then we encourage you to share that information with us so we can add the info to the atlas.

Roy Ledge is a shallow, rocky rise found just beneath the surface of the Northumberland Strait, north of Roy Island. Though often unnoticed by casual visitors, Roy Ledge plays a quiet but important role in the way waves, currents, and sand move along this popular stretch of coast. At low tide or during calm conditions, the outline of Roy Ledge becomes more apparent as swells break differently over the submerged rocks. Roy Ledge also contributes to the natural dynamics that make Melmerby Beach such a distinctive place.
The Flats in Amet Sound, off Cape John, are a shallow shoal formation that plays a defining role in the coastal geography of the area. Situated near the eastern entrance of the Sound, The Flats are a broad, submerged sand and gravel shoal that extends outward from Cape John into the sheltered waters of the sound. Their presence has long influenced navigation, as the shoal creates shifting shallows that mariners must account for when entering or leaving the sound.
The Eastern Peak is a submerged shoal feature within Amet Sound, positioned just off Cape John, it has long been noted on nautical charts as a hazard to navigation. This feature, marks one of the shallowest points in the approaches to Amet Sound. Rising abruptly from the surrounding seabed, the peak is composed of rocky outcrops tied to the Cape John Formation—a Carboniferous sandstone and conglomerate unit that underlies much of the peninsula.
The Amet Island Shoals are a cluster of shallow, rocky and sandy formations lying just inside the entrance of Amet Sound, off Cape John in Pictou County, and have long been recognized as a defining navigational feature of the area.
Rocky Patch is located in Merigomish Harbour just east of Point Betty on Olding Island.
Roaring Bull is a solitary rock formation rising from the waters of the Northumberland Strait off of just off the coast of Sinclairs Island. It has long served as a navigational reference point for local fishers, boaters, and coastal residents. Its exposed position in open water means it is often surrounded by choppy seas, a characteristic that likely contributed to its evocative name.
Dulse Rocks is located just off of Olding Island in Merigomish Harbour.
The Rock Pile is a well‑known shoal within Amet Sound, lying just off Cape John, it has long been marked on nautical charts as a navigational hazard. This submerged terrain feature consists of a cluster of rocky outcrops and shallow ledges that rise close to the surface of the water, creating a natural obstruction for vessels entering or leaving the sound.
